The end, at last! Of the Guards Anyway.
My co-worker didn’t join me today. I had to face the guards by myself.
Rather than working on the guards in place, I removed them and worked on them on the bench. It made it a lot easier. The passenger side was particularly tough to work on as the car is jacked up on the driver side (to make it easier to work on the rear of the sill).
For some reason, the paint couldn’t get off the guard fast enough today. I had the rest of the two guards done in no time at all (compared to the time that it had taken us to get the rest of the guards done that is). The passenger guard has quite a bit of bog on the bottom of the guard and I have decided to sand this off rather than strip it. This is yet to be done, but should only take a few moments.
Dad decided to start tackling the rust damage at the rear of the sills. We had originally planned to cut the whole section out, but decided to only cut out the part of the panel that was “infected”. This ended up being a much better idea as the repair went together with minimal fuss.
We made a template of the patch that was required and cut the piece of metal with a jigsaw. With a little shaping to get the curve right, we had the piece screwed in place and ready for welding. We had bought new welding rods (the ones Dad prefers to use) and the welding went like a dream. All in all, we are both very happy with the results. All that is left to do is to fold the edge and shaping with a bit of metal mend.
