The Dash is Out
At last, a weekend that I can actually get to work on the car, dismantling of the interior is the plan for today. This time of year is always soo busy. BTW, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all the readers out there. Hope it’s been a happy and fun time for all.
Today, Penny and I started by peeling off all of the vinyl that was still in the car. Most of it is in good condition, but a few pieces have tears and holes in them. I am thinking of getting all of the vinyl replaced, just not sure how to do it. I have heard that there are kits that you can get. I will have to look into this more, once the car is closer to being ready for needing it. We also took out the roof lining as well. It all came out very easily. The sponge under most of the vinyl will have to be replaced, but that is not a big issue.
After a lunch break, we started working on getting the dash out of the car. We tried to follow instructions in one of the many books that I have, but it was a bit hard to follow. In the end, we studied the car and took things off that seemed logical to take off next. It wasn’t that difficult to do in the end.
One of the biggest problems was working through the wiring loom. The owner that replaced the radio had done an interesting job on the wiring. Every wire connected to the loom was speaker cable and no colour coding was used. Aside from the radio loom, there is some “creative” wiring going on with the hazard lights (I think it is for the hazard lights). I had to cut three wires that were connecting the dash loom to the body loom. The wires were spliced into the loom and do not look original at all. I think there is going to be some fun times ahead getting all of the electrics all in order.
After all the work, we decided that it was a good time to clean up the car a bit. It had gotten very dusty with a lot of paint stripping ending up in the car. After a bit of a clean up, I am starting to think that I should pull up all of the bitumen sound deadener from the floor pan. I can see some rust spots and I am not sure whether it is just surface rust or if there are holes. Better to check it all now then have the floor fall to pieces once the car is all finished.
